A High Court sitting in Federal Capital Territory Abuja has remanded the husband of the late gospel singer, Peter Nwachukwu, in the Kuje correctional facility pending determination of his involvement in the circumstances surrounding the wife, Osinachi’s death.
The court further ruled that a homicide-related suit was instituted against him by the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, and that the case would be concluded before being allowed to leave.
The presiding judge, Justice N.K. Nwosu-Iheme, gave the order on Friday after the gospel singer’s husband pleaded not guilty to 23 charges brought against him by the Attorney General.
As gathered, the suit brought against the deceased singer’s husband and before the court were bordering on domestic violence and homicide, among others.
The judge ordered that the suspect be remanded at the correctional facility while the trial was adjourned to June 16 and June 17 respectively.
Speaking while being led into the blackmaria, Nwachukwu lamented that the government was prosecuting him for an offense he did not commit.
According to him, I have suffered a lot. My wife had cancer of the lungs and that was the reason for her death. I am not responsible for her death. I am being punished for what I do not know.
Osinachi’s husband was remanded barely two months after she died on April 8, and many of her colleagues had accused her husband of subjecting the victim to domestic violence, which led to her death.
The Federal Government claims that he contravened Sections 104 and 379 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015, Section 221 of the Penal Code, and the Violence Against Person’s Prohibition Act (VAPP) 2015.
