UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has said he is “extremely worried” about the situation in Niger.
Speaking to reporters, he said he spoke with Bazoum after the coup attempt.
“I don’t know exactly where he is, but he was detained,” Guterres said. “He told me he was well, but he told me that the situation was very serious.”
Guterres also warned of the “terrible effects on development” and civilians due to “successive unconstitutional changes of government in the Sahel”.
“If you look at the region, you have dramatic terrorist increase of activity in Mali, in Burkina Faso, in Nige … you have military regimes,” he said.
Former senator of the federal republic of Nigeria, Shehu Sani has reacted over the military take over in Niger State, Condemning the development as imperfect for democracy in West Africa.
Shehu Sani in a statement released via his verified twitter handle read, “Military rule must be totally rejected and resisted in West Africa.Our democracy is not perfect and there is no perfect democracy anywhere.Military rule is not the solution.”
I’m surprised to read comments in the social media,it appears that many young people are now in support of it.I understand the disappointment and the frustration with the political class. It’s still better we continue to struggle to 11 make our democracy better until we get it right.
ECOWAS, the Economic Community of West African States, has called for the immediate release of Bazoum, who it says remains the legitimate president of Niger.
The bloc, which Niger is a member of, has also called for a return to constitutional order in Nigel without delay
