After the recent deposition in the case filed by Atiku Abubakar against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Chicago, some have been attempting to twist the outcome to suggest that Mr. President presented a forged certificate to INEC. However, this assertion is far from the truth, as the school’s representatives never made such claims or insinuations.
Caleb Westberg, the registrar of Chicago State University, provided testimony on behalf of the school, and here are the relevant excerpts from his deposition:
Westberg confirmed that Bola Tinubu, who attended CSU, is the same person who holds the position of the President of Nigeria today. He also stated that Tinubu applied to the university as a male, and a letter of admission was issued to him as a male.
The registrar explained that the university does not typically retain diplomas. However, they had a diploma prepared for Mr. Enahoro-Ebah in their possession because Mr. Tinubu had not picked it up. He emphasized that they do not have the diploma submitted to INEC because Mr. Tinubu had picked it up. The registrar also pointed out that in the United States, diplomas are considered ceremonial documents, and more reliance is placed on transcripts. He acknowledged that some errors in data entry could occur.
Westberg clarified that the discrepancies in fonts, signatures, and styles between various diplomas issued by the school over the years were due to the fact that the replacement diploma issued to Tinubu in 1997 was produced by outside vendors. This explained the variations.
He noted that a Social Security Number (SSN) entered on the Southwest transcript was the same as the one indicated in CSU records. SSN serves as a unique identifier for students. The registrar also recognized Southwest College as a feeder school for CSU and confirmed that Tinubu graduated with honors, a GPA distinction. He commented that highly motivated students tend to achieve greater success in life.
Westberg concluded by acknowledging that the entry on the APC’s website, stating that President Bola Tinubu was born in Lagos on March 29, 1952, corresponds to the information available.
