According to Punch, Former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, is now in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). He is currently undergoing interrogation at the agency’s National Headquarters in Jabi, Abuja. Emefiele was apprehended by EFCC operatives on Thursday night, shortly after he was released from the Department of State Services’ detention.
According to reliable sources, Emefiele is being investigated by the EFCC for alleged misconduct during his tenure as the head of the apex bank. The specifics of the investigation have not been disclosed, but his detention appears to be related to activities carried out during his time as the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria.
“Yes, Emefiele is currently in our (EFCC) custody; he was arrested last night less than an hour after the DSS freed him. He’s currently being interrogated at the Headquarters, as he’s being investigated for alleged misappropriation of funds amongst other things during his term as CBN governor,” the source noted.
Our sources indicate that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) might bring new charges against Mr. Emefiele. Despite our attempts to confirm this with EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale, there has been no official response as of Friday.
Emefiele had been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since June following his suspension by President Bola Tinubu from his position. During this period, he was asked to transfer his duties to Folashodun Adebisi Shonubi, the deputy governor of the operations directorate at the central bank.
The DSS announced his custody, citing investigative reasons, and later he was arraigned on a two-count charge in a Lagos federal high court, which was later withdrawn by the Federal Government. Subsequently, a fresh 20-count charge was filed against him, but the arraignment has been delayed twice.
It was reported that Emefiele proposed a plea bargain agreement, including his resignation as CBN governor and forfeiture of certain assets. On September 22, Emefiele’s resignation was officially confirmed by the CBN after Olayemi Cardoso was appointed as the new governor
