NCC Announces Progress in NIN-SIM Linkage, Urges Final Compliance Before September Deadline
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has reported significant advancements in the Federal Government’s 2020 initiative to link all Subscriber Identification Modules (SIMs) with National Identity Numbers (NINs).
According to the Commission, over 153 million SIMs have now been successfully linked to a NIN, representing an impressive 96% compliance rate. This marks a substantial increase from the 69.7% recorded in January 2024
As the process enters its final phase, the NCC is calling for the continued cooperation of all Nigerians to achieve full compliance by the September 14, 2024, deadline.
The complete linkage of all SIM cards to NINs is deemed crucial for enhancing the trust and security of Nigeria’s digital economy. By verifying all mobile users, the policy aims to bolster confidence in digital transactions, mitigate fraud and cybercrime, and foster greater participation in e-commerce, digital banking, and mobile money services. This, in turn, is expected to promote financial inclusion and drive economic growth across the country.
In collaboration with the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) and the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), the NCC has uncovered disturbing cases where individuals possessed an excessive number of SIM cards—some holding over 100,000. The Commission is also committed to working alongside security agencies and other stakeholders to combat the sale of pre-registered SIMs, ensuring national security and maintaining the integrity of mobile numbers in Nigeria.
To ensure full compliance with the NIN-SIM linkage policy, the NCC has directed all Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) to complete the mandatory verification and linkage of SIMs to NINs by September 14, 2024. Starting from September 15, 2024, the Commission will no longer permit any SIM to operate in Nigeria without a valid NIN.
The NCC urges members of the public who have not yet completed their NIN-SIM linkage or who have encountered issues due to verification mismatches to visit their service providers immediately to update their details before the deadline. Approved self-service portals are also available for this purpose.
The Commission also reminds the public that the sale and purchase of pre-registered SIMs are criminal offences, punishable by imprisonment and fines. Citizens are encouraged to report any such activities to the NCC via their toll-free line (622) or through the Commission’s social media platforms.
The NCC extends its gratitude to the public for their continued cooperation in strengthening Nigeria’s digital ecosystem.
