Globaltimes Be more involved in politics, lawmaker tells youth
The member representing Ifako-Ijaiye Constituency 01 at the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Adewale Temitope Adedeji has called on the youth to be more politically active in the affairs of their area.
He spoke at an event organised by the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Ifako-Ijaiye Branch, on the topic “Legislation and the People: Bridging the Gap, Opportunities, and Challenges“held at the Ifako-Ijaiye Secretariat Hall, Idiagbon.
Represented by his media head, Akinleye Segun, Hon. Adewale said one of the ways to bridge the gap between legislation and the people is for youths to get involved in political affairs.
He said, “When we talk about legislation and the people, we talk about lawmakers and the act of lawmaking for the good of the people. Now, we talk about bridging the gap. How do we do that?
“As the people, we have a huge role to play. We need to get more involved in electing those who represent us. This means we need to be politically active—register with a political party and participate actively.
“Beyond that, we need to question our representatives. We elected them, and we should be able to engage them on matters of lawmaking. If there are bills in the House, we can ask them their stance on such bills. We need to attend public hearings before bills are passed. That is part of getting involved and bridging the gap between legislation and the people.
“It is easier to stay on the sidelines and point fingers. What we need to do is to be part of the process of electing people who will represent us.”
