A foreign contractor has been apprehended by the Abuja Metropolitan Management Council (AMMC) on allegations of vandalizing streetlights within the city in an attempt to secure maintenance contracts.

The AMMC Coordinator, Mr. Felix Obuah, announced the arrest on Tuesday, October 29, following an inspection of ongoing streetlight repairs and maintenance efforts in several parts of the capital.

RAccording to Obuah, the contractor allegedly orchestrated the damage to streetlights, aiming to create maintenance needs that would increase the likelihood of his company securing lucrative repair contracts from the city. “The minister of the FCT has given us a mandate to ensure that Abuja is fully illuminated. During our spot assessment, we found that extensive vandalization had taken place,” Obuah said. While some vandalized areas are undergoing repairs, he noted that the level of damage was higher than anticipated. Today, however, we uncovered the involvement of high-profile contractors in undermining our efforts,” Obuah explained. The AMMC has pledged to submit a full report to the minister of the Federal Capital Territory, who has emphasized strict enforcement of city infrastructure protection policies. Obuah underscored that the government would not tolerate such acts, especially when they compromise public safety and waste resources. “We can’t be installing and repairing these lights while individuals sabotage our efforts. Those involved in vandalism or purchasing stolen items will be held accountable,” he asserted
