Death threats for NUJ Presidential Candidate
The camp of frontline Presidential Candidate of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Garba Muhammad, has raised the alarm over threats to his life.
The Chairman of his Campaign Council, Daharatu Ahmed Aliyu, raised the alarm in a statement issued yesterday, Friday, November 22, 2024 with a screenshot of the message received by Garba Muhammad on Wednesday evening, November 20, which said: “You are on high kill contract so you have to be very careful”.
“The above ‘Threat to Life’ text message was received by GARBA MUHAMMAD, our Presidential candidate, from a number that is not in his contact, on Wednesday evening November 20th, 2024.
“This unregistered number became inactive shortly after,” Aliyu stated.
Maintaining that election is not a war, Aliyu further said that some other key supporters of Garba Muhammad, who is News Express Regional Editor (North), have also been called and threatened.
The statement continued: “That is how far some people have desperately taken this election. We believed the election is supposed to be a family affairs and not a WAR.
“Same day, a member of the campaign council was also called and threatened by two candidates, just about the same time our candidate received this message.
“Mud sliding, blackmail and name calling seems not to be working, now they have resort to sending threat messages using unregistered numbers directly to our candidate’s number.
“This is not acceptable and should be discouraged. Such a tradition should not be allowed but unacceptable trends in the practice of Journalism.”
While the matter has been reported to the relevant authorities for immediate investigation, Aliyu noted that power is from God and “we are believing in Him for protection and victory in all our endeavors in shaa Allahu.”
“Already, we have formally reported to all relevant security agencies with intent to immediately launch an investigation.
“There is only one very important fact, which remains clear here: God gives power to whoever he desires to be.
“Our destiny and life is also in God’s hand. No individual or group can alter that.
“We are believing in Him for protection and victory in all our endeavors in shaa Allahu”
He subsequently urged all supporters to be determined with the assurance that “no form of intimidation or harassment could shift the desired success and divine victory in the course ahead”.
“We use this medium to appreciate and appeal to all our supporters to remain resolute, undeterred and be focused, as no form of intimidation or harassment could shift the desired success and divine victory in the course ahead,” he added
