Globaltimes Lagos-Ibadan Expressway: FG to Construct Flyovers, Underpasses in Phase Two Expansion
The Federal Government has officially launched the second phase of the rehabilitation, reconstruction, and expansion of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and Section One of the Lagos-Sagamu Expressway, with a projected completion period of 24 months.
The project will feature key infrastructure upgrades, including underpasses at Kara, Wawa, Magboro, and Arepo, as well as flyover bridges at Kilometre 16 near the Mountain of Fire Ministries (MFM) and Kilometre 37 at Makun, Sagamu. Additionally, five pedestrian bridges will be built at Arepo, Magboro, NASFAT, Deeper Life, and Redemption City.
Minister of Works, David Umahi, made these announcements during an inspection of Federal Government projects across the country.
He outlined the scope of the second phase, which covers 24 kilometres and includes underpasses at Magboro, Warewa, Arepo, Sagamu, and Iperu.
The next phase will extend the reconstruction from Iperu to Ijebu-Ode, covering a total of 96 kilometres.
Umahi stressed the importance of financial accountability, mandating that no contractor would receive payments without an Advanced Payment Guarantee (APG) certificate and a valid Performance Bond. He commended President Bola Tinubu for his commitment to infrastructure development and acknowledged Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun’s efforts in fostering regional unity.
Speaking on behalf of President Tinubu, Governor Abiodun reiterated the administration’s focus on road safety, reduced travel times, and economic growth. “This project is a significant step in our commitment to infrastructure development. It will meet international standards and ensure the durability of one of Nigeria’s busiest highways,” Tinubu stated.
The president also praised the people of Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Ondo, and nearby states for witnessing this milestone and highlighted the importance of road infrastructure in economic development. He appealed to road users for patience while urging contractors to expedite the project.
Ogun State Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Ade Akinsanya, welcomed the inclusion of footbridges, assuring the government’s collaboration to ensure timely completion.
Meanwhile, the Akarigbo and Paramount Ruler of Remo Land, Babatunde Ajayi, called on the government to introduce overpasses or speed bumps in Sagamu and Ilisan-Ilabo to enhance traffic management and prevent accidents.
